Flooded Basement Cleanup: Step-by-Step Guide for Alabama Homes
A flooded basement is the most common emergency call we get after a heavy Alabama storm. Here is how to handle the first few hours safely, and what professional cleanup involves.
Step 1 — Safety before anything
Do not walk into standing water if outlets, appliances or the electrical panel might be submerged. Cut power at the main if you can do it from a dry location; otherwise call the utility. If the water came from a sewer backup, treat it as contaminated — gloves, boots and no bare-skin contact.
Step 2 — Find and stop the source
Common basement flooding causes in Alabama: failed sump pumps, foundation cracks during heavy rain, water heater failures, burst pipes and sewer backups. Fix or shut off the source before pumping, or you'll be doing it twice.
Step 3 — Remove the water
Submersible pumps handle deep water; truck-mounted extraction handles what's left in carpet and pad. Speed matters — see our post on the 48-hour mold rule.
Step 4 — Remove what can't be saved
Carpet pad, soaked drywall (cut 12–24 inches above the water line), particleboard furniture, and anything touched by sewage.
Step 5 — Dry the structure
Air movers and dehumidifiers run 3–5 days with daily moisture readings on block walls, framing and slab. Basements dry slowly because concrete holds water.
Step 6 — Prevent mold
Antimicrobial treatment of framing and block, then a plan for the cause: sump pump backup, grading, gutters, a dehumidifier.
